Benefits for Children with Different Learning abilities

Professional instruction in Shorei-Ryu karate emphasizes discipline and courtesy, builds confidence, develops coordination and reinforces study techniques for school. Classes are available for children aged 7 to adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) and other learning challenges.

Excerpt from Karate class helps boost children’s self-esteem: People with AD/HD have difficulty controlling their attention span, impulsive behaviors, restlessness and hyperactivity, according to Steve Bonfilio, Ph.D., program director of Park Nicollet’s Alexander Center for Child Development and Behavior. “Problems with self-control and impulsiveness eventually lead to academic and behavior problems at school, in the home or within the community. Children who have trouble controlling their behavior may do poorly in school, resulting in low self-esteem,” said Bonfilio. Mastering the art of karate requires strict discipline and intense concentration . . . students learn flexibility, discipline, listening skills, respect, karate terminology and techniques.
